Luxury Villas in Sicily

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and, in many ways, a country of its own, layered with Greek temples, Roman mosaics, Norman cathedrals, and Baroque towns, and crowned by Europe's most active volcano. Few places pack so much history, landscape, and distinct culture into a single island, from the glamour of Taormina to the wild volcanic archipelagos offshore. It is also one of the best value corners of Italy, which is part of why so many guests come back to see the parts they missed.

Sicily has 2 main international gateways at opposite ends of the island, plus smaller regional airports, so the right arrival point depends on where you are staying.

Catania Fontanarossa (CTA), on the east coast, is the busiest airport in southern Italy and the gateway to the east: Taormina is approximately 65km / 40 miles away, roughly 1 hour by car, and the Baroque towns of the Val di Noto, along with Syracuse and Mount Etna, are all within about 1.5 hours. It has direct flights from cities across Europe, with intercontinental connections through Rome or Milan.

Palermo Falcone Borsellino (PMO), on the northwest coast, serves the capital and the west, approximately 35km / 22 miles from Palermo and roughly 45 minutes by car, with Cefalù about 1.5 hours away.

Trapani Birgi (TPS) is a smaller airport in the far west, convenient for Marsala, Erice, and the western coast, and Comiso (CIY) in the southeast is handy for the Val di Noto. Distances across the island are considerable, so most guests fly into the airport nearest their villa. A car is essential for exploring Sicily, though not for getting around Palermo, Catania, or Syracuse themselves.
 

Palermo and the northwest
Palermo is one of the Mediterranean's great cities, a raucous, layered capital of street markets, gilded churches, and the Norman and Arab palaces that earned it UNESCO recognition, with the golden mosaics of nearby Monreale among the finest in Europe. The seaside suburb of Mondello provides the city beach, and an hour east along the coast, Cefalù pairs a magnificent Norman cathedral with a sandy beach and a tangle of medieval streets. Behind them rise the Madonie mountains, a different Sicily of forests, hill towns, and mountain cooking.

The west: Erice, Trapani, and the temples
The western tip of the island is quieter and studded with reminders of the Greeks and Phoenicians who once ruled it. Erice sits on a mountaintop above the sea, a medieval town often wrapped in cloud; below, Trapani looks out over salt pans and the Egadi Islands, while Marsala gives its name to the fortified wine made here since the 18th century. The Greek temples of Segesta and Selinunte stand among the most complete anywhere, and the coast around San Vito Lo Capo and the Zingaro reserve holds some of Sicily's clearest water.

Agrigento and the south
On the south coast, the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento is the single greatest concentration of Greek architecture outside Greece, a line of Doric temples along a ridge above the sea that is at its best in the low light of early morning or evening. Nearby, the white marl cliffs of the Scala dei Turchi drop to the water, and inland at Piazza Armerina the Villa Romana del Casale preserves the richest Roman mosaics in the world. This is a warm, agricultural corner of almond groves and fishing towns that sees fewer international visitors than the coasts to either side.

The southeast and the Val di Noto
The southeast is Sicily at its most graceful. After an earthquake leveled the region in 1693, its towns were rebuilt in a flamboyant late Baroque that earned Noto, Ragusa, Modica, and Scicli a place on the UNESCO list, all golden stone, sweeping staircases, and theatrical facades. Syracuse, once the most powerful city in the Greek world, keeps its heart on the island of Ortigia, a dense and beautiful maze of piazzas, palaces, and seafood restaurants. Modica is famous for its grainy chocolate, made to a method centuries old, and the coast holds nature reserves and quiet beaches at Vendicari and beyond.

Mount Etna and Catania
Mount Etna dominates eastern Sicily: at over 3,300 meters, it is Europe's largest and most active volcano, a UNESCO site whose slopes can be walked, driven, and in winter even skied. Its volcanic soils produce some of Italy's most exciting wines, and villages like Linguaglossa and Milo have become a destination in their own right for the reds and whites of the Etna appellation. At its foot, the port city of Catania is built from black lava stone, with a grand Baroque center and a boisterous fish market that is one of the best places to eat on the island.

Taormina and the Ionian coast
Taormina is Sicily's most famous resort, a cliffside town of medieval lanes and gardens wrapped around a Greek theater that frames Etna and the sea beyond, glamorous since the 19th century and busier than ever today. Below it, Giardini Naxos and the cove of Isola Bella offer the beaches, and the whole Ionian coast makes an easy base for the east. It is the most polished corner of Sicily, and the one where booking ahead matters most.

The Aeolian Islands
Off the north coast, the 7 Aeolian Islands rise from the sea as a volcanic archipelago, a UNESCO site and a summer world of their own. Lipari and Salina are the largest and greenest, Salina known for its capers and Malvasia wine; Stromboli is a live volcano that throws out fire against the night sky; and Panarea is the small, chic island where the yachts gather in August. They are reached by hydrofoil from Milazzo and best explored by boat.
 

May and June open the season with mild, sunny days, and the temples and Baroque towns at their most comfortable to explore before the height of summer. July and August are peak season and the warmest months, when the coast, the beaches, and the Aeolian Islands come into their own, the island's liveliest festivals fill the towns, and Taormina and the seaside resorts are at their most vivid; inland and around the archaeological sites the heat is stronger, best enjoyed in the early morning and evening. September and October carry warm seas and warm days alongside the grape and olive harvests, with the summer pace beginning to ease. Outside this window, winter is mild on the coast and in the cities, with snow on Etna and the almond blossom around Agrigento by February.

No other Italian region offers quite this range within a single island. In one trip a guest can stand among Greek temples, climb an active volcano, wander 3 or 4 of Europe's finest Baroque towns, and swim off a volcanic island, all against a backdrop of some of the best food in Italy. Sicily is also, relative to the mainland's fashionable regions, exceptional value: villas, dining, and everyday life cost well below what the same quality would command in Tuscany or on the Amalfi Coast, and only Taormina and the Aeolians in high summer approach those prices.

The food alone rewards the journey. Sicilian cooking is a cuisine of its own, shaped by Greeks, Arabs, and Spaniards: arancini and pasta alla Norma, caponata and pasta with sardines, swordfish and tuna along the coasts, couscous in the west, and a tradition of sweets, cannoli, cassata, and the granita and brioche eaten for breakfast in summer, that has no equal in Italy. The wines have caught up with the food, from the mineral reds and whites of Etna to Nero d'Avola, Grillo, and the fortified Marsala of the west, and the produce, Bronte pistachios, Modica chocolate, blood oranges, is exported the world over.
