About the Italian Riviera

The Italian Riviera is Liguria at its best: pastel fishing villages, the Cinque Terre and Portofino, warm swims, pesto and focaccia, and a quietly chic coast.

About the Italian Riviera

The Italian Riviera is Liguria's narrow strip of Mediterranean coastline, where cliffside villages, fishing harbors, and Belle Époque resort towns are stacked between the mountains and the sea. It divides naturally into 3 parts: the glamorous Riviera di Levante around Portofino, the hiking villages of the Cinque Terre farther southeast, and the quieter, more old-fashioned Riviera di Ponente to the west. Essenza Escapes' Ligurian properties suit guests who want dramatic coastal scenery and excellent seafood, within reach of Genoa.

How to Get to the Italian Riviera

Genoa Airport (Cristoforo Colombo / GOA) is the primary gateway for the region, approximately 40km / 25 miles from Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure, roughly 45 minutes by car. It is the most convenient arrival point for guests staying anywhere on the Riviera di Levante.

Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei / PSA) is approximately 100km / 62 miles from the Cinque Terre, roughly 1.5 hours by car. It is the most practical airport for guests based in or near La Spezia, Levanto, or the Cinque Terre.

Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE), across the border in France, is approximately 65km / 40 miles from Sanremo, roughly 1 to 1.25 hours by car. It is the most convenient airport for guests staying on the Riviera di Ponente, and often has more frequent international connections than Genoa.

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) is approximately 160km / 100 miles from Genoa, roughly 2 hours by car, and is a workable alternative for guests connecting through Milan.

High-speed rail connects Genoa's Piazza Principe and Brignole stations directly to Milan (approximately 1.5 hours) and La Spezia (approximately 1 hour). The local Cinque Terre Express train links all 5 villages in minutes and is the primary way to move between them, since the villages themselves are largely inaccessible by car.

Where to go in the Italian Riviera

Portofino and the Golfo Paradiso
The most celebrated stretch of the Riviera di Levante, this small gulf holds Portofino's harbor of pastel-colored buildings and yachts, the larger resort town of Santa Margherita Ligure just around the headland, and the fishing village of Camogli facing the gulf from the opposite shore. Rapallo, a short drive inland along the coast, is a larger and more affordable base with easy access to all 3. This is the most premium-priced part of the Riviera, comparable to the Amalfi Coast in both character and cost.

The Cinque Terre
Five villages, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, cling to a UNESCO-protected stretch of cliffside coastline southeast of Portofino. Terraced vineyards climb the slopes above each village, and a network of coastal hiking trails, including the rebuilt Via dell'Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola, connects them on foot. The villages themselves have no meaningful car access, so a stay here typically means a base in La Spezia or Levanto with train or boat access into the villages by day.

Genoa
Italy's largest port city is often overlooked as a mere gateway, but its old town, one of the largest medieval quarters in Europe, holds the Renaissance palaces of Via Garibaldi, a world-class aquarium, and a maze of caruggi (narrow lanes) that reward a day of exploring before or after a coastal stay.

The Riviera di Ponente
West of Genoa toward the French border, the coastline turns gentler and less crowded. Sanremo, known for its flower trade and its music festival, retains a faded Belle Époque grandeur along its seafront promenade. Alassio and Bordighera are smaller, quieter resort towns with a loyal following among Italian and European regulars rather than international visitors, and represent considerably better value than the Riviera di Levante for a comparable stretch of coastline.

Sestri Levante and the quieter east
Just southeast of the Golfo Paradiso, Sestri Levante offers 2 bays, the Baia delle Favole and the Baia del Silenzio, in a single small town, with a fraction of Portofino's crowds and prices. It functions well as a calmer base for guests who want proximity to the Cinque Terre without the logistics of staying inside the national park itself.

When to go to the Italian Riviera

The best time to visit the Italian Riviera depends on what you are looking for, but May, June, and September are generally the strongest months for hiking.

Spring brings mild temperatures and wildflowers to the Cinque Terre's hiking trails, along with noticeably thinner crowds than summer in Portofino and the 5 villages alike. June offers warm, reliable weather before the peak summer arrives. July and August are the busiest months, particularly in Portofino and the Cinque Terre, where trail and village access can feel genuinely crowded in the middle of the day; the sea is at its warmest, and an early morning or early evening pace rewards guests who want a quieter experience. September carries much of summer's warmth with a marked drop in visitor numbers, and is a favorite month among repeat guests. October remains mild along the coast, though rain becomes more frequent, and many smaller village restaurants and hotels begin to reduce their hours from November through March, when the Riviera settles into a quiet off-season.

Why Visit the Italian Riviera

Few coastlines pack this much variety into so short a distance. A single stay can combine the yacht-harbor glamour of Portofino, the terraced hiking villages of the Cinque Terre, and the faded elegance of Sanremo, with Genoa's old town and a major international airport within an hour of almost anywhere on the coast. That density, paired with genuinely dramatic scenery at every turn, is what makes Liguria function differently from Italy's other coastal destinations. Value varies sharply by location: Portofino carries some of the highest prices on the entire Italian coastline, while the Riviera di Ponente and towns like Sestri Levante offer considerably more for the same budget.

The food is inseparable from the landscape. Basil grown on these terraced hillsides makes what many consider Italy's finest pesto, traditionally paired with trofie or trenette pasta, and the coast's seafood, anchovies from Monterosso, focaccia from Genoa and Recco, and a local white wine, Vermentino, that pairs with almost everything, gives the region a food identity distinct from the rest of Italy. Cinque Terre's terraced vineyards, worked by hand because no machinery can manage the slopes, produce small quantities of wine that rarely leave the region.

What Essenza Escapes arranges on the Riviera goes well beyond the villa. Private boats between the Golfo Paradiso's villages that avoid the summer ferry crowds, early access to the Cinque Terre trails before the day-trip crowds arrive from Pisa and Florence, reservations at Portofino's harborside restaurants, and a driver who knows every hairpin turn on roads that punish unfamiliar visitors: these are the details that turn a week on the Riviera from a series of postcard stops into a properly organized trip. Essenza Escapes' local network is what makes the difference between seeing Portofino from a tour bus and arriving by private boat at your own table by the water.

FAQs

When is the best time of year to visit the Italian Riviera for a villa holiday?

May, June, and September are the strongest months, with mild temperatures, thinner crowds, and the coastal hiking trails at their best. July and August are the warmest months, perfect for days by the beach. October remains mild but brings more frequent rain, and many smaller village restaurants and hotels reduce their hours from November through March. Essenza Escapes can advise on timing based on which stretch of coast a guest is planning to visit.

Which airports serve the Italian Riviera, and how far are they from the villas?

Genoa Airport (GOA) is the main gateway for Portofino and the Riviera di Levante, roughly 45 minutes from the coast. Pisa Airport (PSA) is the most practical option for guests based near the Cinque Terre, roughly 1.5 hours away. Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE), just across the French border, is the most convenient airport for the Riviera di Ponente near Sanremo, roughly 1 to 1.25 hours away. Essenza Escapes can arrange private transfers from any of these airports.

Do I need a car to explore the Italian Riviera?

A car is useful for reaching villas and moving between the Riviera di Levante and the Riviera di Ponente, but it is the wrong tool for the Cinque Terre itself, where none of the 5 villages allow meaningful car access. Portofino also restricts vehicle access in its historic center, so guests staying there typically rely on walking or boats once they arrive. Most guests use a car for airport transfers and travel between regions, then switch to trains or boats for the Cinque Terre and central Portofino. Essenza Escapes can arrange trains, car hire or a private driver from any Italian airport.

Should I base myself in Portofino, the Cinque Terre, or the Riviera di Ponente?

The right base depends on what a guest wants most from the Riviera. Portofino and the Golfo Paradiso suit guests who want yacht-harbor glamour, boat access between villages, and the shortest transfer from Genoa, but at the highest price point on the coast. The Cinque Terre suits guests focused on hiking and cliffside scenery, though a stay here typically means basing in La Spezia or Levanto and reaching the villages by train, since cars cannot enter them and luxury rental properties are almost non-existent. The Riviera di Ponente suits guests who want a calmer, more old-fashioned resort atmosphere and considerably better value. Essenza Escapes will talk through priorities before recommending a specific stretch of coast.

How much walking and hill climbing is involved in visiting the Cinque Terre, and is it manageable for all fitness levels?

The Cinque Terre's signature trails involve real elevation change, with stone steps and uneven paths connecting villages perched above the water, and the full coastal route between all 5 villages is a genuine hike rather than a stroll. Guests who prefer not to hike can still reach every village by the Cinque Terre Express train or by seasonal boat, moving between them in minutes rather than hours on foot. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are worth packing regardless of how a guest plans to get around, since even short walks within the villages involve steps and uneven stone lanes. Essenza Escapes can advise on which villages are easiest to reach without significant walking and can organise private hiking guides for the best experience.

Is it possible to avoid the worst of the day-tripper crowds in Portofino and the Cinque Terre?

Both destinations see heavy day-tripper traffic in peak season, with tour buses arriving in Portofino by mid-morning and train groups filling the Cinque Terre villages from around 10am onward. Staying overnight in or near these areas, rather than visiting as a day trip, already puts a guest a step ahead, since early morning and early evening are when both places feel closest to their genuine character. Visiting Corniglia and Vernazza before 9am, or after 5pm, avoids the bulk of the crowds that concentrate around Manarola and Riomaggiore at midday. Essenza Escapes builds itineraries around this pattern as standard practice for Riviera guests.
