On the eastern slopes of Mount Etna, Monaci delle Terre Nere occupies an 18th-century aristocratic villa at the heart of a 62-acre organic wine estate. The resort is a member of Relais & Châteaux and operates according to principles of sustainability—from the wines grown in Etna's volcanic soils to the chemical-free cleaning products and estate-grown ingredients served in its restaurants.
The baroque town of Acireale is approximately 20 minutes away, whilst Taormina and Giardini Naxos can be reached in around 30 minutes. A complimentary shuttle service to Taormina operates twice daily for guests. The dramatic cliffs and fishing villages of Costa dei Ciclopi lie along the coast, and Mount Etna itself—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—can be explored by guided hike, horseback, or helicopter departing from the estate's helipad.
The resort comprises 24 rooms and suites within the main building and surrounding grounds, each individually designed with lava stone walls, wooden ceiling beams, and 20th-century furniture alongside original artworks. Bathrooms feature organic cotton robes and towels, with eco-friendly amenities by Anyah. The minibar is complimentary in all room categories. 3 private pool villas—Villa Nobile, Villa Persimmon, and Villa Elegante—are also available, offering guests access to all resort facilities along with a complimentary selection of Etna white and sparkling wines.
Locanda Nerello serves Sicilian cuisine with a focus on slow food and seasonality, using produce from the estate's gardens. A new restaurant concept under a Michelin-starred chef will open in 2026. The Convivium Bar, housed in the villa's former cellar, offers wines from the estate and cocktails at the foot of the volcano. Ayurvedic massage and private yoga sessions can be arranged, and the lava-stone pool provides a place to unwind between excursions.
